CORPORATE
INTERVENTION AGAINST
HIV/AIDS |
|
|
|
|
| The
Office of the Chief Executive Officer, MIDROC Ethiopia,
is aware of the impact of HIV/AIDS not only as a
health issue, but also as all embracing economic
and social problem spreading in the country. Since
the primary concern of the management is pointed
out as its human resources, the software of the
whole business, Corporate Intervention Team on HIV/AIDS
(CIT) has been established in 2001 at CEO's Office.
The main objective of the CIT is to prevent and
control the spread of HIV Virus among the employees
and family members of the MIDROC Ethiopia Technology
Group Companies. CIT is the first of its kind
in the country involving family members in the
activities of each company's management to prevent
and control the spread of the epidemic. CIT is
chaired by a family member of the management and
an effort has continued to make family members
to be active participants in the leadership of
branch committees.
CIT Core Team has its own branches at the main
offices of the companies and plant cells at every
production site. CIT committees at all levels
consist of the management, employees and family
members with due attention to the presence of
high level management staffs, leaders of Human
Resource Services and representatives of Labor
Unions ensuring women participation as well.
At this stage, all MIDROC Ethiopia Technology
Group Companies have their own CIT structure at
all levels, coordinated by the Core Team with
special attention and participation of the Chief
Executive Officer. Employees' Counseling Service
is organized and special assistance policy towards
those employees living with HIV/AIDS is formulated
and is being implemented with maximum care and
confidentiality. Employees living with the virus
obtain financial assistance, change of workplace,
unlimited sick leave and free medical treatment
including free antiretroviral drugs. These and
other activities of the CIT have been taken as
exemplary in the past by the business community
and governmental institutions. The management
has paid special attention to the role of knowledge
in preventing and controlling the spread of the
epidemic. In addition to periodical publication
of CIT Bulletin, the management has allowed all
employees at all places to have one and half hours
discussion time every month to be conducted at
convenient place and time. |

Creating a healthy workforce is vital to productivity
and managerial success. Our modern management
system looks at sports activities as a tool for
teaching the result of teamwork if also applied
to other activities.
The Mechare Sports Club is organized by the Office
of the CEO to promote teamwork among employees,
enhance activities in sport, and make contribution
to the development of football in the country.
Our effort to create a strong and all-embraced
Sports Club is part of our values to adhere to
the modern management principles of Corporate
Citizenship as well as employees' empowerment.
The team brings together employees of our companies
and develops feelings of belongingness through
their support to Mechare Sports Club. Its members
are all employees who are willing to engage in
sports as an extra-curricular activity. Members,
who are not employees of the companies in the
MIDROC Ethiopia Technology Group do not qualify
to join the club. The management is re-introducing
to the country a situation whereby an employee
is primarily a worker in a company and if talented,
can contribute to the development of sport of
the nation till his/her retirement. |
